Alpaca Workshop and Training
~ Introduction to Alpacas Workshop
Alpacas are fascinating animals, but they do need the right set-up and know-how. Our Introduction to Alpacas workshop is designed for small farms and acreage. Perfect if you're deciding whether alpacas will suit your farm and lifestyle. { Read more below }
Thinking about keeping alpacas on your small acreage in the Hunter Valley, Central Coast or greater Sydney region?
Our Alpaca Workshop at Little Valley Farm Alpacas in Laguna, in the heart of the Wollombi Valley, is a practical training session designed for new and aspiring alpaca owners.
Unlike large group farm courses, our workshops are intentionally small and personalised. We run them one-on-one or in very small groups (maximum four people) so you leave with real clarity and practical knowledge, not just theory.
This is hands-on learning on a working alpaca farm in the Hunter Valley, ideal for people planning a small farm, a hobby farm, or a tree change in regional NSW.
What We Cover
During a relaxed but practical three-hour alpaca workshop, we walk through the day-to-day realities of managing alpacas on a small property.
Topics include:
• Alpaca herd behaviour and welfare
• Feeding, pasture management and shelter design
• Safe handling techniques and yard setup
• Routine health checks, including Body Condition Scoring (BCS) and FAMACHA parasite monitoring
• Shearing, nail trimming and vaccination basics
• Worming strategy and FEC testing
• Seasonal farm jobs and realistic time commitments
• The most common mistakes new alpaca owners make
If you’re considering a tree change, hobby farm or rural lifestyle in NSW, we also talk through the practical realities over morning tea.
You’ll leave with a clear checklist and the confidence to either buy your first alpacas in Australia or refine how you’re already managing them.
Workshop Topics in Detail
Our Australian alpaca workshop also covers the practical details many new owners don’t learn until later.
• Alpaca management essentials for small farms
• Huacaya vs Suri alpacas – understanding the difference
• What a Property Identification Code (PIC) is and why you need one before buying livestock in NSW
• How to choose a reputable alpaca breeder in Australia
• Shed design for safe handling and shearing
• Shade, shelter and paddock layout for rotational grazing
• Feeding alpacas in the Hunter Valley climate
• Husbandry basics: vaccinations, toenails, body scoring and FEC testing
• Why alpacas should not run with hard-hoofed livestock
• Understanding females, wethers, entire males and crias
• Weaning, herd dynamics and why responsible breeders don’t sell young crias
• Predator myths, fox management and livestock guardian behaviour
• Alpaca fleece and fibre – from fleece to yarn
• Biosecurity and practical livestock resources for NSW farms
