Hunter Valley, NSW – The recent severe rain and flood event that swept across the Hunter Valley last weekend has left a beloved community of donkeys in urgent need of help. While all donkeys were safely moved to higher ground ahead of the rising waters, the sanctuary now faces a critical shortage of feed and essential medicines. Several elderly donkeys and those requiring intensive care remain especially vulnerable as recovery efforts begin.

The sanctuary, operated by Donkey Welfare With Heart and founded by Christine Berry OAM, is supported by a dedicated team of 40 volunteers, some with service dating back to 1977. Their collective experience—nearly 500 years—ensures that every donkey receives professional, compassionate care, from daily feeding and grooming to complex medical and rehabilitative support.

“Taking care of donkey matters—because donkeys matter,” said Christine Berry OAM, whose decades of service to donkey welfare have earned her national and international recognition.

How You Can Help

Community support is urgently needed to replenish feed, medicines, and supplies. There are several ways to make a difference:

  • Donate: 100% of funds go directly to donkey care—no wages or salaries are paid. Donations cover veterinary visits, feed, medicines, and essential equipment.

  • Buy the Book: “Donkeys: Business As Usual” is available for $50 (postage included in Australia). This comprehensive guide supports donkey care and rehabilitation.

  • Cash for Cans: Support the “KNOW DONKEYS, LOVE DONKEYS” campaign via the Return and Earn app. Donate your 10c drink container refunds to Donkey Welfare With Heart Inc.

  • Subscribe: Stay informed and support ongoing work by subscribing to the quarterly donkey newsletter for $35 per year.

  • Volunteer: New volunteers are always welcome. The sanctuary’s team works tirelessly from dawn to dusk, ensuring every donkey receives the care it needs.

Visit the Donkey Welfare With Heart website for details on how to donate, purchase the book, subscribe, or volunteer.
