A special quiet fills the old train shed at Little Valley Farm when felting begins. Your hands soak in warm soapy water, rolling wool that tightens beneath your palms. Nearby, a couple of alpacas watch from the paddock fence, curious but mostly unfazed.
Join our Make Your Own Alpaca Dryer Balls workshop - a two-hour, hands-on session at our off-grid alpaca farm in Laguna, Wollombi Valley, Hunter Valley NSW. You’ll meet the herd, see how raw fleece turns into something useful, and leave with dryer balls and diffuser balls you made from start to finish.
What you'll actually do
At this workshop, you won’t just watch, you’ll be part of every step.
Meet the alpacas - the fleece you're about to work with comes from this exact herd.
Learn about alpaca fleece - what makes it different from sheep's wool, and why it felts so well.
Clean and card the fibre - preparing raw fleece for felting, the proper way.
Felt your dryer balls - hot water, soap, and a lot of rolling. Your hands will know they've done something by the end.
Make small diffuser balls - a few drops of essential oil and they're ready for the wardrobe, the car, or the bathroom shelf.
Take home your creations - a finished set, plus extra fleece to keep going at home.
The process is pleasantly repetitive, a little meditative, and, as many people say, surprisingly addictive.
Why alpaca wool dryer balls, specifically
Many dryer balls are made from wool, but not all wool is the same. Alpaca fleece is naturally soft, hypoallergenic, and felts well—just what you want for something that will spend its life in a hot dryer.
Used properly, alpaca dryer balls:
Soften laundry naturally, no fabric softener required
Cut down drying time (and your power bill, a little)
Skip the chemicals entirely.
Last for years, not one season
Biodegrade at the end of their life, instead of sitting in landfill
Come from Australian alpaca fleece - in this case, our very own alpaca herd.
The diffuser balls you’ll make are a great bonus. Add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus, and place one in a drawer, in your car, or in your gym bag.
